This mural pays tribute to the building’s architect, Joe Sullivan, who passed away during the construction of this building project. The middle area of the mural depicts a stylized rendition of one of Joe’s sketches of the building facade at a very early stage of the project. Joe’s initial architectural renderings were largely influenced by the famous Piet Mondrian painting “Broadway Boogie-Woogie,” and Mondian’s inspiration for that painting came from Manhattan’s grid system, as well as his love for African-American blues music. To represent those inspiration points, I included parts of that geometric painting behind the Columbus skyline, and inserted various waves and sound waves throughout the mural to create a sense of energy, rhythm, and movement.
